When the Hanseatic League reached its peak, Rostock was one of the most important centres for the handling of goods, which earned the city the title "Gateway to Scandinavia". The 800-year-old picturesque harbour town still has much of its maritime charm. The Schifffahrtsmuseum is an excellent place to inform yourself in detail about various aspects of shipbuilding and the maritime history of Rostock.
Every summer the big maritime festival "Hanse Sail" takes place in the city. Rostock and Warnemünde offer themselves optimally to accomplish a team training on the water with a sailing ship or Volvo Ocean Racer.
